Top Ten Ways To Leave a Legacy*
- Prepare a Will. A Will is a document that gives you power to decide how your money is to be spent. Without a Will, you lose control over how your property is distributed.
- Leave a gift in your Will for the not-for-profits and charities that made a difference in your life. Unfortunately, most people have not included charities in their Wills. Imagine the positive impact on our community if we all gave even a small bequest to a favourite cause. Share this information with your family. Let them know how important it is to you.
- Leave a specific dollar amount to the charity of your choice.
- Leave a percentage of your estate to your favourite charity.
A legacy does not have to be a specific dollar amount in cash. Consider giving assets such as GICs, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, art, jewellery, and vehicles.
- Name your favourite charity as owner and beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy.
- Purchase a new life insurance policy and name your favourite charity as owner and beneficiary.
- Name your estate as beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF and provide in your Will for a charitable gift equal in value to the RRSP/RRIF proceeds.
- Remember loved ones with memorial gifts.
- Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to favourite charities in their Wills.
- Ask your financial advisor how a charitable gift can be used to lower your estate tax.
