We have a dream

We All Belong is a campaign built on a big dream — a dream to welcome more people into the L’Arche Greater Vancouver community.

People who live at L’Arche are aging and many have mobility issues, requiring a fully accessible building. Our building on Sussex Avenue in Burnaby is over 50 years old, has become costly to operate and needs extensive upgrades.

At the same time, there is an urgent need to support younger individuals with developmental disabilities with a variety of housing options and support models. This would require significant changes, and our existing building does not allow us to expand our residential capacity or our community inclusion programs.

The Sussex Ave. property is ideally located to transit and community amenities and our other three L’Arche homes are located nearby.

Our Plan for the New Building

  • Replace three of our current homes for people with developmental disabilities with three fully accessible homes
  • Add 10 units of housing for individuals with disability who can live more independently
  • Expand our community inclusion programs, which provide volunteer, social and recreational opportunities
  • Provide 29 units of non-market rental housing for individuals, couples and families who wish to live in an intentional community setting and to ease the challenge of rent affordability.

The L’Arche Greater Vancouver redevelopment project has a projected cost of $22 million. Local and provincial governments have been extremely supportive of this project with provisional commitments of about $7.1 million.

Our fundraising goal is $6 million. Thanks to our many generous and loyal donors, we are halfway there. Reaching that goal along with a long-term financing of about $9 million will make our big dream a reality!

In a large city where many people feel isolated and along, L’Arche Greater Vancouver is leading by example by building a place of belonging. For an update on our We All Belong Campaign and Re-Development Project, please click here.
